Fast and Furious 5: Porsche GT3 RS

In this scene we see Brian racing in the Porsche GT3 RS he is trying to do a lap of the warehouse without the cameras seeing him as it has the same layout as the police station they are trying to rob. 

The use of camera angles is very effective in this scene. The car has to be accelerating quickly and needs to be very fast to drift otherwise it's quite stiff as it's a super car and needs the traction. We can see what the cameras are seeing as they are mounted on walls around the warehouse this gives us unique views of the GT3 which director Justin Lin wanted.

There is a selection sounds we are hearing in this scene ranging from the Porsche's 4.0 flat-six engine, we also hear the exhaust and tire sequels when Brain is drifting. A perfect example of Diegetic sound.

Some of the props we can see are camera's, walkie talkies, laptops and a podium.

Looking at the semiotics of the scene, based on the signs and symbols the audience thinks the characters are the antagonists as they are planning a heist to get rich of one of the richest men in Rio De Janeiro. But they realise that he is the antagonist as he is selling drugs with an army of corrupt police on his side.

The denotation represented by Paul Walker and his Porsche. In the scene we can see Paul drifting his Porsche whilst the camera props are following him, the objective is trying to drift the car and hit the corners fast so the cameras won't see him, as the warehouse is laid out in the same way the police station, they are trying to rob is.

As this scene is shot in a warehouse we can expect to see natural lighting shining through the windows, we expect it to be dirty and dusty, even some old mechanical equipment, all this adds to the atmosphere of the scene and helps the viewer understand that the location is very secluded.


We can see in this scene the use of apparel the protagonists are wearing and we can assume that they are the protagonists as they are wearing light clothing, instead of dark clothing which could give the effect of being antagonistic.The Mise-en-scene represents everything the viewer can see in the scene. The actors on screen, props, warehouse location and apparel.

Introduction to Fast and Furious 5

 For this task I have been asked to create a blog, which critically analyse a film of my choice, I will select an appropriate film for analysis, watch films critically whilst taking notes, analyse genre characteristics, analyse narrative structures, analyse representation of characters and create the blog.

The film I have chosen for my analysis is Fast and Furious 5. This is a short trailer for the film.

Former cop Brian O'Conner partners with ex-con Dom Toretto on the opposite side of the law. Since Brian and Mia Toretto broke Dom out of custody, they've blown across many borders to elude authorities. Now backed into a corner in Rio de Janeiro, they must pull one last job in order to gain their freedom. As they assemble their elite team of top racers, the unlikely allies know their only shot of getting out for good means confronting the corrupt businessman who wants them dead.

There are a a selection of different car sounds in Fast Five. Including the Lexus LFA, Koenigsegg ccxr, Porsche GT3 RS a Dodge Challenger and much more.

There are various soundtracks for Fast Five, which director Justin Lin picked himself as he thought they worked well with the style of the movie.

The basic meaning we can achieve from the film is that a group of racers try robbing a wealthy drug lord in Rio de Janeiro whilst being pursued by Luke Hobbs an officer of the U.S Diplomatic Security Service.

When we look at the iconography of the film, as it is set in Rio de Janeiro we expect the weather to be hot, and we can expect the characters to be wearing t-shirts. We can also expect the film to include scenes of Christ de Janeiro, a beach and a favela, even if this is just a simple panning shot.

I have concluded that Justin Lin has kept the Fast and Furious 5 narrative simple, modern and well-placed I believe this film has an open narrative as at the end of the film we appear to get a short scene after the credits, telling the audience that Letty, Dom's girlfriend is still alive. There are various stereotypes in Fast 5 including the hero look, Dom and Brain pull off, we also have Luke Hobbs the special officer, with a gun holder strapped to his leg, we also have the classic look of a cigar smoking, suit wearing, James Bond villain. 

I think this film has targeted their audience perfectly, I believe the audience targeted are petrol-head teenagers and action lovers, who are interested in fast and loud sports cars.

 The genre of Fast and Furious Five is extremely important, even though Justin Lin has faded away from the street racing action genre, he has stuck with the action genre and has made the storyline have more depth and meaning, with all our favourite Fast and Furious hero's getting involved in a massive heist worth one hundred million dollars.

In conclusion I enjoyed watching this film as I am interested in cars. I would happily watch this again, even someone who wasn't interested in cars but liked the action genre would enjoy this film as the protagonists are planning a heist to become rich, which will take some clever planning.
